Details:
This unique trip allows you to paddle from the confluence of the Marias and Missouri Rivers to the
historic Coal Banks Landing Recreation Area.
You'll travel overland from Virgelle via the old ferry along country roads to the
Wood Bottom Wildlife Viewing area, where you embark on your downstream journey.
Along the way, you'll pass the sites of some of the earliest white settlement in
the area near present day Loma. Further along, you'll paddle past numerous
islands and wooded river banks that host a wide variety of wildlife and native
plants.
About half way through the trip, you may stop along the bank for a riverside lunch
of homemade fare. (Custom menus are available upon request, with guided or
outfitted options.) After a leisurely dining experience and reloading the
canoes, you set off on the remainder of your
journey.
Along the way you pass the area of an historic Lewis and Clark campsite, the
Virgelle Ferry crossing, and numerous historic homestead sites. It is common to
see mule deer, beaver, pelicans, geese, eagles and a wide variety of other birds
on this isolated stretch of river within the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument.
Your trip ends at Coal Banks Landing, where your shuttle awaits to take you back to
Virgelle.
(The Virgelle Ferry site is a contingent take-out point, in case of inclement
weather or other paddling difficulties...)
-Trips depart Virgelle at approximately 9:00 A.M. and return at ~5:00 P.M.
(Weather plays a significant roll in determining arrival times...headwinds
